More waterfowl are migratory than not, spending their winters in the warmer south and returning to the north for breeding. Note that most Mallard-colored drakes, and some of other colors, undergo an Eclipse molt in late summer, after which they are colored like females. Along with grains they are getting grasses, shoots of weeds, worms, snails, and bugs. A diverse range of food sources can be offered in site preparation. In the months of July to December when daylight is short, ducks slow down their production of eggs.
